Kit Announcement
It’s been the hot topic of the week – the Kit price hike!
If you’re not aware, Nathan Barry, Kit CEO and Founder, recently issued a statement explaining that they were eliminating their base-level plan (up to 300 subs), and increasing the price of their premium plans.
What’s upsetting people?
Kit (formerly ConvertKit) haven’t raised their pricing in 12 years, but I don’t think the price increase is what most people are most upset about – I think it’s the removal of the 0-300 subscriber plan.
There’s a significant number of Kit customers who fall into the category of having fewer than 300 subscribers, paying between $9/m-$15/m, and getting unlimited access to automations etc. – I believe those are the people who have been most impacted by the change.
If you’re in this category, then you could be experiencing an increase of up to 300%, which is huge by anyone’s standards (even though your subscriber limit has also increased to 1,000).
However, having done some market comparisons, I think the new Kit pricing is now more aligned with the competitors out there; like Mailerlite, Mailchimp, etc.
What should you do now?
I’m not here to persuade you one way or another when it comes to which email marketing platform you use, but I’d like to offer my thoughts on a few options you have if you’re struggling with the price hike.
Option 1: Move to Kit’s free ‘Newsletter’ plan
If you don’t need much in the way of automations, then perhaps one Visual Automation and one email sequence will suffice. It allows up to 10,000 subscribers.
To downgrade to this plan, send an email to Kit support and ask for your account to be moved to the free ‘Newsletter‘ plan.
|
Option 2: Move to another platform (e.g. Mailerlite)
If you really don’t want to stay with Kit, then there are plenty of other options out there, however, as I mentioned, they do pretty much align when it comes to features/prices.
The downside to this option is that you may need to recreate any automations/sequences you have on a new platform.
You’ll also have to re-authenticate your sending domain etc. (i.e. SPF, DKIM, DMARC) via your DNS settings.
P.S. I did a price comparison between Kit’s new pricing and Mailerlite’s pricing and the annual ‘equivalent’ plans were about $50 apart (Kit being the more expensive one) – so about $1 per week more.
|
Option 3: Accept the price increase and stay on Kit’s ‘Creator’ or ‘Creator Pro’ plan
If you take the approach that this is a commercial decision made by Kit, and decide to focus on monetising your email marketing system, then the impact of the price increase may lessen.
If you are spending, let’s say, $400 per year on your email marketing system, then you need to make at least that much to break even (about $8/week).
If you create the widely accepted email marketing ROI of 30X* in your business, then you’d generate sales of $14k.
And, if you reach somewhere in between like 10X, then you’d make $4k in return – a great return in any marketing comparisons.
(*Data source: Statista, they state the number to be between 36X and 42X)

Email Marketing Tip
Start with a simple segmentation strategy.
When a subscriber joins your email list, it’s normally because they’ve seen value in what you share (or offer), and usually want to learn more from you.
Once you’ve successfully delivered on your initial promise (e.g. your free guide, course, PDF, etc.), then begin with a simple segmentation question – with 2 or 3 options, no more.
Here are some simple segmentation question examples;
🏋 Health & wellness sector:
What do you want to do right now?
- Lose excess body fat
- Get my eating in order
- Improve my physical fitness
|
💰 Personal finance sector:
What do you want to do right now?
- Pay off debt
- Grow my savings
- Learn how to invest
|
👩💻 Career development sector:
What do you want to do right now?
- Get promoted in my current role
- Find a new job
- Start my own business
|
📬 Email marketing coaching sector:
What do you want to do right now?
- Learn about the tech
- Grow my email list
- Automate my system
|
By asking the question, and most importantly, capturing subscribers’ responses, you can then move people into email sequences that solves their current challenge or guides them towards a goal.
If you adopt this approach throughout your entire email marketing system, you’ll find your subscribers stick around much longer and become more likely to buy your products and services.

Tech Tip
Are you looking for a free calendar management platform?
Are you a solopreneur, with no team to worry about?
Then you may like this little free calendar tool – imaginatively called ‘Cal‘.
(Btw, it’s good for teams too, just not on a free plan!)
It provides all the functionality you’d expect from a calendar tool, but unlike some tools, most is available for free!
The free plan includes;
- Unlimited bookings
- Multiple booking types
- Accept payments via Stripe (i.e. paid appointments)
- Integration with the major calendars
- Workflows
With a nice, clean layout, it’s obviously been designed with simplicity in mind, making its use fairly intuitive.
If you do have other people in your business, here is the Cal pricing for teams and organisations;
If you want to get yourself set up with a free account, get it below;
As an aside, they have something on their website you don’t often (if ever) see on other similar platforms – they describe themselves as “The most public private company.”.
It even includes the salaries of their employees – you can check it out here.
